"If I Stay": An Emotional Perspective on the Importance of Perspective

2014 has had its fair share of tear-jerking movies. Each year there seems to be a steady balance of films that fall into a wide emotional scale. "If I Stay" is one of those films that will stick with you. The movie follows young, musically-gifted Mia Hall, played by the up-and-coming brilliant actress Chloe Grace Moretz. Mia's life changes almost instantly when her and her family get into a car crash, leaving her in a coma. During an out-of-body experience, Mia has to decide whether or not she wants to wake up and live a life far different than the one she had prior to the crash. It's an emotional roller coaster. So, just brace yourself for that.

People will say this movie is about a lot of things. If I had to pin point the greatest theme of the film in one word, it would have to be perspective. Mia comes from a quirky family, not unlike most you would find in your own neighborhood. Some of the best scenes of the film are when the family is interacting with each other. The idea of perspective, or the importance of perspective is plastered all over. While in the coma, Mia travels back to various memories of her family and her loving boyfriend, focusing on the differences between what she thought was important at the time (teenage mind perspective), and what was ultimately important to remember. It's not hard to reflect on your own life as you watch Mia reflect on hers. It's a truly moving experience.

Chloe Grace Moretz is an insanely talented actress. I mean, the girl is only 17 and her breadth of work is astounding. The first film I remember seeing her in, and one she'll always be remembered for, was "Kick-Ass", playing Hit Girl, the best character of the whole film. Though she's only 17, she has a commanding presence when on screen and is as real as you could ask for. It's nice when an actor can get lost in a character, allowing you as an audience member to buy into them. It makes for a great viewing experience. Plus, she just seems like the type of person you'd want to be friends with.

If you're looking for a date night movie, this might be a good choice. "If I Stay" is truly a lovely film. It'll make you laugh and cry. Most importantly, it'll make you think about the important things in your life. It's a very reflective experience. One I think you'll enjoy.
