Don't Poop on my Nostalgia, Hollywood!
When it comes to the types of movies that grace our movie screens today, to me it seems either Hollywood is desperate or they're genius. One of the most compelling aspects of our lives here on the blue planet is the power of memory and how the past has influenced our present and future. Hearkening back to a time that brought us joy or helped to define who we are can offer us a moment of happiness. It's the power of nostalgia, and Hollywood is capitalizing on this power in order to make money, rather than deliver original stories. Is this a desperate move in order to make a quick buck? Or is this a genius play? I say: LEAVE MY NOSTALGIA ALONE HOLLYWOOD!
From one who remembers Goonies as a child, I say leave it alone. I mean, c'mon. Too many times have we seen Hollywood take precious things from our childhood (*cough* Transformers) and place them into the hands of incompetent filmmakers (*cough* Michael Bay) who dangle by the strings of the production company puppeteers, only to make a film that destroys the youth we used to have for the sake of a paycheck. Granted, the industry today is all about franchises, but Goonies shouldn't be a franchise. Before we know it, E.T. 2 will be right around the corner, followed by a Back to the Future reboot. You wait and see.
What would be much more compelling is to give us something new. Would it be interesting to see the Goonies all grown up? I mean, what would we see? Data working at his dead end job as a technical support guy, unable to find a steady relationship? Mikey and Brand discussing the colleges their kids are attending while balancing work and a hectic family life? Mouth on probation? Skinny Chunk? Oh, all while hunting some newly found treasure along side divorced Stef and all their children? Spare us, please. I beg of you. Leave Goonies alone. Come up with something new, something original. I know it's hard, but at least try. For the sake of the art over the paycheck, GIVE ME A REASON TO BELIEVE IN YOU, HOLLYWOOD!!
